This site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. That is a commitment about how it was made and tested, not a badge, so this page says what was actually checked and what is still outstanding.

What was done

  • Keyboard. Everything that can be clicked can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone. There is a skip link to the main content, and the mobile menu traps focus while it is open and returns focus to the button that opened it.
  • Focus. Focus is always visible, using a two-tone ring: a dark outline with a yellow halo. A single colour was tried first and failed contrast against one of the site's two backgrounds, so both halves are deliberate.
  • Contrast. Body text meets 4.5:1 and large text 3:1 throughout. Text over photographs sits on a gradient scrim weighted so it clears 4.5:1 whatever the image behind it is doing.
  • Without JavaScript. Every page is readable and every link works. The contact form submits and confirms normally. Content that fades in on scroll is visible immediately when scripting is off.
  • Reduced motion. If your system asks for reduced motion, animation and transitions are switched off and nothing moves on scroll.
  • Zoom and reflow. Pages work down to a 320px viewport and at 400% zoom without content being cut off or needing sideways scrolling.
  • Text spacing. Increasing line height, letter spacing and word spacing does not clip or overlap any text.
  • Images. Every photograph carries alt text describing what is in the frame. Decorative elements are hidden from assistive technology rather than described.
  • Targets. Interactive elements are at least 24 by 24 pixels, and navigation and buttons at least 44 pixels.

How it was tested

Automated testing used axe-core across every page at desktop and mobile widths, checking WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 at levels A and AA. Manual testing covered keyboard navigation and focus order, behaviour at 320 pixels wide, text-spacing overrides, reduced-motion preference, and the site with JavaScript disabled.

Testing was done with automated tools and by hand. It hasnot been audited by a third party, and it has not been tested with real screen reader users. Both are worth doing, and neither has been done yet.

Known limitations

  • Journal posts may embed video hosted elsewhere. Those videos do not currently carry captions or a transcript, which does not meet WCAG 1.2.2. Captions will be added as the films are re-hosted.
  • Photographs are described in alt text, but a long description of a complex image, for example an aerial view of a whole course, is necessarily a summary.
